  7.     Colombian cocaine cartel leaders are apparently investing
  8. in precious gems. "Cash is a pain," says a DEA official. "It's
  9. bulky if you move it, traceable if you bank it, and it mildews
  10. if you bury it." Which may explain why Colombians have been
  11. reported buying up jewels -- principally diamonds -- in
  12. Antwerp, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. U.S. agents don't think these
  13. buyers are Christmas shopping. "You can transport millions of
  14. dollars' worth of diamonds in your back pocket," says an
  15. investigator. Furthermore, diamonds don't rot when stored in
  16. the underground caches favored by Colombian dons.
